Here are some of our most commonly asked questions and their answers. Please feel free to contact us if you have any other questions or concerns!

We have created some example videos that demonstrate playback on CRT TVs and LCD TVs in both 24 fps and 30 fps. To view the videos, click here or use the button below.

Q. What is 24 frame playback?
A. 24 fps playback is the process of converting and displaying video at the same frame rate that films are shot—24 frames per second—to preserve proper motion cadence. On film sets, this is crucial because any graphics, screens, or CRT monitors in a scene must match the camera’s frame rate to avoid flicker, stutter, or pulldown artifacts.
Proper 24 fps playback ensures that anything shown on a CRT looks natural on camera and matches the final edited footage.
Q. Do we need 24 frame playback?
A. You'll need 24 fps playback any time a CRT TV is turned on, visible on camera, and is being filmed at 24 fps. The majority of our clients rent their TVs at 24 fps.
Alternatively, some choose to rent non working props TVs and simply comp the screen in post production, which can be a cost effective solution.
Q. How does 24 frame playback work?
A. Most CRT TVs normally operate at 30 fps and can't display true 24 fps on their own, so we need to modify the TVs here at our shop to slow them down. A trained playback technician would operate the specialized equipment we use on set in order to convert your video to a 24 frame signal.
Q. Should the TV be set for 24 or 30 fps?
A. Many of our TVs can be set for either 24 or 30 fps, depending on your needs. For on camera use, a true 24 fps signal will always be the most reliable option. However we do have work arounds for on-camera 30 fps solutions which are less reliable, but more affordable.
For non professional video use such as events and exhibitions, we recommend TVs be set to their native framerate of 30 fps for a natural look.
Q. Do you carry 24 fps playback kits?
A. Yes, we carry 24 fps playback kits in house and have them available to rent. The kits are customizable to each job and include one 24 fps converter. One playback kit can only convert a single feed at a time, so if there are multiple video sources there will need to be multiple kits rented. Our kits also include all of the necessary cables, adapters, power bars, and more.
Q. Do we need a technician?
A. For all 24 fps package rentals, a playback technician is required to be on set in order to operate the equipment. If you need a technician, please feel free to let us know and we will get you in touch with one!
Q. What do we need to provide for a TV rental?
A. For all TV rentals, we require either a certificate of insurance or 50% deposit made before the TVs can be picked up. This is required due to the status, age and rarities of our TVs.
Q. Is there a budget friendly alternative to 24 fps playback?
A. For lower budget productions, there is an 30 fps alternative to 24 fps playback. It is not nearly as reliable or robust as 24 fps playback, however we do have a workaround which can be used if necessary. Get in touch with us if you are interested in inquiring about this workflow.
Q. How does pricing work?
A. All of our TVs rent out at a weekly flat rate and we do not offer daily pricing at this time. Our pricing structure for TVs is typically based on screen size so the larger the screen, the higher the weekly rate. Playback kits rent out at a daily rate with a 3 day week. Please contact us for all inquiries about pricing.
Q. I'm not from a film production, can I still rent a TV?
A. While we primarily service clients within the film and tv industry, we are also open to other rentals. In the past we have provided many 30 fps CRT TVs for non-film jobs such as live events, exhibitions, installations and more. If you are interested in renting some TVs for an event, please feel free to reach out and we would be happy to help find a solution for you.
